A great start to the new year…

Thanks to everyone who came out to our show on Friday Jan 2… one of our best parties ever! An epic jam with Byzantine Blue was our highlight, top notch sound and singing by Dragan Markovic, and collaborations with bellydancer Aviva and a turkish interlude by Shivaun!

Don’t miss the next one, Feb 6 with Tambura Rasa!

But before that, join us on Jan 17 at Performance Works! All the details on the calendar to the right: —->

Thank you and news update

Thanks to everyone who came to the last Sljivovica Social Club at the Seven Lounge. And as we begin our seventh year as Vancouver’s Balkan Brass band, we want to give a big thanks to everyone who has supported us over all this time. 2015 holds much promise as our best year yet: we have a great new lineup with new members Nikola Tosic (tenor, trumpet), Steve Clements (tenor), and Dragan Markovic (singer, snare/darabuka).

We would also like to announce that Demiran Cerimovic will once again be coming to Canada to headline our annual Ederlezi Festival on May 8 an 9! This will be his fourth visit to Canada. He will be available for private events between April 24 and May 17, but dates are booking up fast already!

We already have many weddings and festivals booked for 2015! Last year we were booked solid from early June through end of August, so if you are planning a wedding or special event, reserve your date soon if you want to be sure of getting us!

Our latest CD, “Sa!”, has been awarded as one of Highlife Record’s “top picks” CDs of 2014! You can buy it from them (1317 Commercial Dr, Vancouver) or from us at any of our shows.

As you can see from the new photo above, we recently did a photo shoot with Diane Smithers and the results are fabulous! Big thanks to Diane and her assistant Martin for putting in so much effort! (https://www.facebook.com/DianeSmithersPhotography). Here’s another one of the many great shots:

And finally, a number of us are planning to visit Serbia and Macedonia this August! On the agenda is Guca trumpet festival, and workshops and lessons in Vranje, Ohrid, and elsewhere. And of course partying in kafanas and splavs in Belgrade, attending Roma weddings with Demiran in Vranje,  and tasting wine in Southern Macedonia!

Six years and a new album!

We are looking forward to our combined CD release party and 6th Anniversary party at the Seven Dining Lounge on Friday November 7!

Many things have changed in those six years. We began as a 6-piece Balkan-inspired band, and didn’t even have a trumpet in the beginning! Since then we have transformed to an authentic South-Serbian-style “trubachi” band and have learned many of the standard tunes and styling both by traveling to Serbia and by bringing our teacher and mentor Demiran Cerimovic to Canada three times.

During that time we have had many members join and leave, with only three of the founding members still in the band. This fall marks another new era, with several people departing the band, and some very talented new members joining us! We will be introducing these new musicians at our show on November 7, please do come and support them and us as we begin a new era!

(And hopefully you will buy our new CD!)

October 18, the greatest Balkan Brass Band ever is coming to town…

…and we will be opening for them!

Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar is the band that inspired the founders of Orkestar Slivovica to form a band in the South Serbian/Macedonian Romani style. Our teacher and mentor Demiran Cerimovic considers Boban Markovic to be one of the greatest trumpet players ever in the entire history of this genre. Please come to this very special show, which will also be the final appearance for a few retiring members of Orkestar Slivovica, and will feature collaborations with Jack Garton, who used to play with us before rising to fame with his bands Maria in the Shower and Demon Squadron.

Autumn gig schedule

We have had a very busy and eventful festival and wedding season and we now shift to more indoor and intimate shows. We will resume our monthly “kafana” nights at the Seven Dining Lounge on the first Friday of each month, and on the November 7 show we will have the official release of our long-awaited second CD! And the highlight of the season will no doubt be on October 18 when the grand master of our style of music Boban Markovic comes to Vancouver!

Upcoming shows update

Thanks to all who came to our last Sljivovica Social Club with Tambura Rasa. It was a huge success! We celebrated THREE birthday parties that night! Apologies to the many people we had to turn away. We stress that reservations are HIGHLY recommended as this is a small venue that is being inspected regularly for capacity compliance so they can’t take chances by letting in more people than their liquor license allows. Call 604-875-9006 to reserve. Next month our guest band is Mashregh! See HERE for more details.

Then, join us May 9 and 10 for our annual

EDERLEZI Balkan Brass Festival with DEMIRAN CERIMOVIC, all the way from SERBIA!

Plus 3 smoking hot bands from Seattle!

More info on this soon!

~ This will be our last self-produced community hall dance party event for at least one year, so don’t miss it! ~

Gig calendar update – Sljivovica Social Club dates for 2014

Thank you all for supporting us and making 2013 our most successful year yet! It was a year of big changes, with two original band members leaving and several new players joining. We had more gigs than ever before, including 16 performances in 6 weeks during Demiran and Novica Cerimovic’s visit.

Next year promises to be our busiest yet! We already have much of next summer booked with festivals and weddings, and we now find ourselves in the enviable position of being able to choose the best gigs among many offers! Aside from several weddings already booked, we have been asked to play Smithers Midsummer Festival, Arts on the Fly (Horsefly, BC), Mission Folk Fest, Harrison Music Festival, and expect offers to return to Princeton, ArtsWells, and Whistler! We are also planning on bringing Demiran Cerimovic back in the Spring. And our Cd is slowly but steadily nearing completion, and will feature several guest stars including Demiran and Novica!

Here is our lineup for our remaining 4 Sljivovica Social Club shows of the season:
